W.C. Fields in The Golf Specialist

Enjoy this classic 1930 20-minute short featuring W.C. Fields as Golf Specialist J. Effingham Bellwether.

For those unfamiliar with the late comic actor and writer (and even juggler) wearing the shoes of the Golf Specialist, Fields was well-known by his distinct drawl, subtle physical comedy, and love affair with drinking. While the game of golf gets the Fields treatment here, the comedian appears in many similar roles–playing poker, pool (billiards), and ping-pong for, instance.

If a social environment during his time leaned toward cliche, Fields probably used it as a backdrop, a fact that helped make his type of comedy accessible regardless of whether he set his sojourns in a barber shop, a diner, or a dentist’s office.
